Jeannie is the owner of therunningbaker24dotcom. She likes reading, writing, taking photos, traveling, and running. After turning plant-based she had difficulty eating desserts so she decided to learn baking and to make dairy-free desserts that she can enjoy and share with others. Writing is also something that she likes doing and so the name therunningbaker24. It is the combination of two of her passions running and dairy-free baking.

Meatless Movement recently had a chat with her.

Please tell us more about yourself

My name is Jeannie I’m from the Philippines and currently based in Singapore. I have lived here for about 10 years now.

Why Plant Based?

I’ve watched some documentaries about plant based ultra runners and documentaries about animal industries and how bad it is for the planet and for our health. Since then, I started my journey on plant-based meals, this is what captivated my attention to baking.

I prefer to call myself plant based though I know the values and key differences of the three, Vegan Vegetarian and Plantbased. It started a few years ago, I can’t remember exactly because I’m going through different transitions. First I  eliminated pork, then beef, chicken and then dairy. I think I’m lucky because I’m not really a big fun of cheese except only for pizza but now so happy that there are pizza with vegan cheese.

Slowly I stop buying dairy and meat products in the grocery

It started with me reading a book about 3-4 years ago where the author mentioned how pork is bad for our health and then I’ve seen a few documentaries about plant-based ultra runners, because I’m a runner too and I feel that’s hardcore and I want to try to fuel myself with just vegetables, fruits, and wholefoods.

I have read some interesting books as well about running and how Mexican runners fuel themselves without meat and mostly beans.

Also it happened that I’m a blood donor and iron intake is important, there are times I can’t donate because my iron is just below which means I have to eat more green leafy veggies or more lentils and sleep early.

I just prefer plant-based because I’m more into real foods like vegetables although I’m not against mock meat. It’s just a personal preference.

I’m satisfied and happy with my choices

I think finding restaurants that have vegan/plant based options has been hard when I was coming out or eating with friends, but I’m glad they have been respectful of my food choices and they consider what I prefer to eat. 

Also I would check the menus in advance so I know already ahead of time what I will eat and sometimes I choose the restaurant that can cater for all of us.

I also learned to say no on gatherings like if there’s a contribution I learned to say no and told them I will buy my own food, something that I can really enjoy.

I feel like in my own small way I’m making contributions even if it’s just really small. I know that I’m doing something good with myself and the environment and for the animals.

There are people who are also curious about what I eat and I’m happy to share with them my journey and ask me for recipes.

As a runner I’m really enjoying fueling myself and that I don’t have to limit carbo-loading.

Transitioning to a plant-based diet? Here’s some tips to get your started. Start slowly and follow your own pace. Start with meatless Mondays for a few weeks and see how you like it. Start giving up cow’s milk and try alternatives like soy, oat, almond milk and others.

Watch documentaries, I honestly haven’t seen earthlings. I don’t know if I can take the brutality being done with animals. I  am not yet ready for that and also I feel like I don’t have to see it to be convinced not to eat.

Don’t also listen to others especially if you feel being the center of talks about your choices. I am not perfect and I also fall short sometimes so it’s okay to take time and enjoy the journey.

I have a blog about vegan baking, recipes and running. When I was starting I felt like there were not many options for vegan desserts and they seemed to be expensive so I decided to create recipes that are dairy-free and vegan.

I also want to share my experience and become a motivator to try to live a healthy lifestyle and how to start with this journey.
