In 2007, Lawanda Haney embarked on a transformative journey as a new mother, determined to shed postpartum weight and explore fresh passions aligning with her objectives. Her remarkable achievements transpired through the practice of Pilates, yoga, and long-distance running over the subsequent years.
From 2017 onwards, a pivotal shift led her to embrace a plant-based lifestyle, progressively transitioning into full-fledged veganism. Simultaneously, she delved into the realm of weightlifting and ventured into the realm of amateur bodybuilding. Notably, even amid the challenges posed by the pandemic and the persistence of postpartum weight concerns despite advancing age, Lawanda emerged triumphantly, surpassing her previous accomplishments.
Today, drawing from her dual roles as a devoted mother and a certified fitness expert, Lawanda crafts personalized programs meticulously tailored for women with diverse health aspirations and obstacles.
Meatless Movement recently had a chance to chat with her.
Tell us more about yourself, please
Hi! I’m Lawanda from the the DMV area in the United States. I’m a proud wife and mom of two children. I’m a personal trainer and nutrition coach by profession.
I became a vegan mainly for my health and because I was raised on meat and no longer liked the way it made me feel physically or emotionally to eat it. I went on my last Pre-vegan vacation six years ago and went completely cold turkey, no animal products immediately when I got home.
The only challenges about my food options in public is people not really understanding that vegans don’t eat ANY animal products including dairy and eggs. Also, being asked how you get your protein as a visually fit person can get very annoying at times.
For those new to a meatless lifestyle, what guidance do you have?
Just do it. Little by little, try incorporating a meatless dish into your diet. Also, look into factory farming and some of the facilities run by big name restaurants and retailers. The level of animal abuse will make you cry.
Many of us choose or stick to this lifestyle for ethical reasons and our health.
Start small. Be adventurous with trying new restaurants and foods.
I love shopping at farmers markets for local produce, and Vegetable Garden in Silver Spring, MD is one of my favorite full menu vegan restaurants.
I love it! I love animals and appreciate being a voice for them and a healthier person these days.
It encourages you to become creative at recipes, and there are so many tasty foods to try that you might not have usually picked up.
Love everyone. Be patient. Practice compassion and kindness every day of your life.
