A couple of months ago I started to upload recipes of vegan sweets on instagram. I think it is something very simple, and many times with simple substitutions you can get to make those cakes of a lifetime. No need to turn everything into something very complicated or with ingredients that are hard to find in a supermarket.

Last year after an illness that led me to paralyze my life due to a kidney deficiency I switched to a plant based diet and decided to make my own vegetable garden. This was a big change for everyone. Having a garden promotes eating more fruits and vegetables and especially seasonal foods, and I think implementing that mentality in my life has had an impact on my whole family’s life. For example, my nephews now eat more vegetables without being vegan. Previously, I had been a vegetarian, I don’t think I ever took the plunge because I had such a sweet tooth that I didn’t know how to recreate those cupcakes and cakes.

One of the coolest stories I’ve had recently was with a follower who thanked me because her daughter was vegan and my videos helped her. I think it’s great that you can upload a video and someone on the other side of the world can watch it and help her.

The biggest challenges I have experienced have been cooking from scratch. I understand that in bigger places like Barcelona or Madrid it is much easier in terms of restaurants or ingredients. In the end, living in a small town, you can’t find many things and you have to come up with your own ideas to get them or make them yourself. How do you feel about being a vegan/vegetarian? I think that apart from health, it is something that is cultural. In my travels in Africa, people in those villages considered goats sacred. It was a shock to me that they could eat dog meat or chicken meat, but the goat was sacred and they couldn’t eat it. In the end they are all animals and they are all the same, it is the cultural belief that we have. My three hens are rescued, it was a very exciting moment because you have to think that normally these hens live in cages the size of a sheet of paper. And that is something that we humans have created.

How to Begin a Meatless Diet?

That can start by reducing meat consumption naturally. I understand that it is a world of work for many people to get started. I have many friends who are not vegan, but through activism have started to increase their consumption of plant-based meat. In the end it is not necessary to go from 0 to 100, there are many small things that can be done on a daily basis, and gradually makes it easier to implement it.

I would like to recommend an influencer, her name la gloria vegana, she has a recipe book that saved my life when I started veganism. She has the best “croquetas” I’ve ever tasted in my life, it is also a very practical channel where there are recipes for the day to day in a practical way. Because many books or professionals give you recipes, but the day to day is very different: you need to know what to take for a snack in a luchnbox to work, snacks for your children, etc … I think gloria with his life makes life easier for someone who just started. And as a restaurant, I would recommend an extraordinary place in Tarragona called “el vergel”.

What are the common myths about going meatless?

I think everyone gets asked the famous protein question. A vegan eats the same amount of fruit and vegetables as a normal person, we are not thinner because of an excessive consumption of vegetables. The only thing to keep in mind is that we get our protein source from other types of food such as tofu. But that does not mean at any time that there is a deficiency of minerals or in our diet by not eating meat. Many times these products have more protein than meat and without the added animal suffering of meat.

I think one of the coolest stories is once I made all the cakes and the sweet table for a vegan wedding and when I get together with friends and they taste my sweets. For a lot of people who are closed to veganism, tasting the sweets changes the concept and that helps to make it easier to accept on a social level.
