If I’m not eating, I’m probably thinking of my next meal

I’m currently a nutrition and dietetic student from Singapore! My passion is to help people achieve their health goals through nutrition from food. I started @fruityemz as hobby to document what I ate in a day and didn’t expect it to grow into where it is now. I enjoy cooking, baking & photography. In this space, I take your favourite recipes and simplify them to the essentials, always with a plant-based twist. I enjoy the artistic side of it.

I went vegan overnight when I was 15 years old due to health reasons but Im currently plant-based due to personal reasons.

What are the common hurdles when it comes to locating vegan/vegetarian cuisine or dining out with friends as a vegan/vegetarian? What are some effective ways to tackle these challenges?

I try to be flexible when im eating with my friends and family. People adopt a vegan/plant-based lifestyle for a variety of reasons, some of them health related, others as a conscious choice to help the planet. One of the most frequently cited reasons why people become vegan/plant-based is because of a genuine concern about animal rights. I don’t force my beliefs on others. If you’re choosing to surround yourself only with people with the same belief system, and alienating anyone who thinks differently, that’s a really unhealthy way to live.

Many people think that going vegan/plant-based means having to eat “fake meat”. Plant-based meats are great for meat eaters who want to cut down on meat and are looking for plant-based protein alternatives. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of them mainly because they are processed foods which are not healthy like whole-foods plant-based diet.

Many people opt for plant-based meats for multiple reasons but they should rethink their reasoning if it’s for their health. Consuming processed proteins need not necessarily help you to stay full and last throughout the day. But well-planned whole-foods plant-based meals with fibre, protein, healthy fats and carbohydrates that include tofu, fruits, beans, nut butters, vegetables, avocado, oats, potatoes and quinoa definitely can.

I cook most of my meals so I can’t really recommend any good places but I definitely can recommend some pretty good recipes like this pumpkin Mac and cheese and healthy Ferrero Rocher 🙂

Regardless of our reasons for choosing a vegan lifestyle, we can all make a positive impact on the world by reducing animal suffering one meal at a time

Emily – fruityemz

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Not all vegans have the same goal and that is totally fine. If someone became a vegan for health or the environmental and live the same lifestyle as an ethical vegan for the animals, the end result is still the same – fewer animal-based products are purchased contributing to less animal suffering.

The goals of each individual might be different and the reasons they chose the vegan lifestyle might vary but it’s safe to say that the animals appreciate those choices regardless of the factors that motivated the change in the first place.
