I want to always embrace my body with all its changes and make every effort to age healthy 💪

Hi! I’m Meiske, 47 years young and living in Germany with my husband and three kids.

I’m originally from Southeast Asia, and I absolutely love cooking and eating—there’s just something so satisfying about fresh, homemade food! While my family is okay with eating cold meals sometimes, for me, a warm, freshly cooked meal at least once a day is non-negotiable!

But I’m not just a food lover—I’m also passionate about fitness. Weightlifting is a big part of my life, and I’ve built my own little home gym. I work out 4–5 days a week, sometimes even 6. I’m not training for competitions; I just want to stay fit and healthy as I age. Women naturally lose muscle mass over time, and I started my fitness journey at 42 to fight that process. Now, I’m stronger, healthier, and more confident.

• What made you turn vegetarian or vegan? How long have you been one?

When my husband and I met, he was pescatarian, and eventually, I joined him. We were a pescatarian family for about 17 years. But three years ago, I had a life-changing moment during lunch. I was eating salmon, tofu, veggies, and spaghetti when I suddenly felt a wave of disgust. The taste, the texture—it wasn’t the same anymore. In that instant, I realized I was done with eating fish.

That experience led me to explore veganism. I wanted to live a lifestyle that was not only healthy but also compassionate. As I dove deeper into research, I realized I didn’t need animal products for protein or nutrients. Going vegan has brought so much energy and vitality to my life, and I haven’t looked back since.

• Any interesting stories during this period?

One of the most memorable moments was that day I felt disgusted by the salmon on my plate. It felt like my body was rejecting the idea of eating animals, and I couldn’t continue. I remember talking to my family afterward and telling them how I felt. It was a huge shift for me, emotionally and physically. From that day on, I committed to a vegan lifestyle. It wasn’t just about my health anymore; it became a personal mission to reduce harm to animals.

• What challenges have you faced in finding vegan/vegetarian food? How do you overcome them?

Thankfully, it’s getting easier! There are more vegan products in supermarkets and restaurants now, and even fast-food chains have started offering vegan options. But I remember in the early days, I would spend so much time reading ingredient lists to make sure products didn’t contain hidden animal products. Even now, I still double-check some things. It’s funny because my kids have become pros at reading labels!

When it comes to eating out, I’ve never had too much trouble finding something vegan. If I know the restaurant, I check the menu online before going. It helps to be prepared. And when in doubt, I always go for something simple like a salad with balsamic vinegar or a veggie pizza without cheese. Italian restaurants are a safe bet—they always have vegan-friendly options like spaghetti al olio or pizza with tomato sauce and fresh veggies.

• How do you feel about being vegan?

I feel more energetic, cleaner, and overall healthier. Most importantly, I don’t feel guilty about eating anymore. There’s peace in knowing I’m not contributing to animal suffering. I don’t have to worry about whether the food on my plate came from a healthy or humane source because it’s all plant-based.

• How would you encourage someone who isn’t vegan to try meatless meals?

If someone is hesitant to give up meat, I’d suggest they start with plant-based alternatives like tofu, tempeh, or mushrooms. You can marinate and cook them just like meat, and the flavors are incredible! It’s all about how you season your food. For those who are okay with gluten, seitan is a great option—it has a meaty texture and is packed with protein.

It all comes down to how you season your food, really!

I can make delicious satay or any other meat dish using tofu, tempeh, mushrooms, or seitan. The key is to realize you don’t need meat to enjoy a flavorful, satisfying meal.

There are so many ways to make plant-based dishes taste amazing. Plus, you can feel good knowing your food is cruelty-free and healthier for your body.

Vegan cooking is very easy and fun. I 💚 it !

There are so many great and delicious vegan dishes! But just because something tastes good doesn’t always mean it’s healthy.

My go-to advice is to cook at home as much as you can. That way, you control the ingredients and ensure you’re eating wholesome food. I like to follow the 80-20 rule: 80% homemade meals and 20% from eating out or with friends.

One of my favorite homemade meals is a bagel sandwich with seitan chunks and vegan cheese made from almonds. It’s easy and quick to prepare, packed with protein, fiber, and healthy fats.

People often think that vegans only eat bland salads, but that’s not true at all! Vegan food is vibrant, flavorful, and varied. Another misconception is that you can’t get enough protein or build muscle on a vegan diet. But there are so many plant-based protein sources, and plenty of vegan athletes and bodybuilders prove that it’s possible to thrive without animal products.

What tips do you have for beginners starting their meatless journey?

Healthy living is about balance. Lifting weights, sharing meals and making memories with those I love ❤️🥰

Take it one step at a time. Remember, you are what you eat, and nourishing your body with plant-based foods is like giving yourself a gift. taking care of your body is just as important as taking care of your family. Your body will thank you for it.

I hope I can inspire at least one person to consider this beautiful, life-changing lifestyle!!

Best regards,

Meiske Veit
