Please tell us more about yourself
Hi I’m Laurie Landry, I reside in Los Angeles, CA with my supportive partner Tim. I’m a plant-based wellness coach, a licensed cosmetologist, an artist, actor, and animal lover.
Both health and animals have a hold on my heart, and I’m on a mission against any form of animal cruelty, including saying no to eating our furry, feathered, and finned friends. Let’s break the myth that animal foods are the secret to health. Spoiler alert: it’s quite the opposite.
I’m here to spread education on healing and plant-based wisdom. 🌱 As a wellness coach, I’m all about helping women break free from the clutches of chronic illness using the power of a whole foods, plant-based lifestyle.
Those “incurable” labels? Psh, I don’t buy it. I’ve seen healing happen, and I’m living proof. Let’s show those docs that there’s more to the story!
I grew up with a giant host of health issues: malabsorption and constipation at birth; five sets of ear tubes until age eight; constant aches and pains; juvenile rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis at age nine; and severe depression in my twenties where I almost took my own life.
I was constantly in pain and uncomfortable in my own skin. I experienced restless leg syndrome, chronic fatigue, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Raynaud’s syndrome, eczema and psoriasis, chronic sinusitis, food intolerance, allergies and asthma, chronic yeast infections, anxiety, ADHD, and this list of symptoms and diagnoses goes on and on. I was at the doctor’s office 3 times a week getting test after test and different procedures. I underwent 10 surgeries and hundreds of prescriptions and medications.
I was so sick of always being sick. I missed tons of school and social events because I had an appointment or I didn’t feel well. When I was older, I had trouble holding full time jobs and eventually had to go on disability. I wasn’t really living my life, I was merely existing. I felt like a burden to those around me, and constantly thought of how I could feel better or just not exist.
Because of my health issues, I was forced to learn about medical conditions, therapies, and side effects.
I put my trust in the medical industry to “fix” me but things only seemed to get worse. I needed to find something else. I became interested in holistic and natural remedies when I was young, and I’d seek out health books and naturopaths as I got older.
I tried many diets but nothing would stick. The more and more I sought after finding relief, the more I found that animal products should be shed if I wanted my body to repair itself and heal my gut.
But I couldn’t figure out how to let go of my dairy addiction and exist in a society where veganism and plant-based eating wasn’t the norm. I had no friends or family who ate the way I wanted to eat, which was to not eat animals at all and to minimize processed foods.
When the world shut down due to the pandemic in 2020, my partner and I decided to give a vegan diet a try.
Since we hadn’t bought meat or fish to cook at the house in years and we couldn’t socialize with friends or go to events, we figured that being isolated gave us an advantage to test out a new lifestyle. Even though we occasionally got take-out from nearby vegan restaurants, I already noticed my symptoms getting better. Once I ate more whole-foods, plant based, I was able to come off medications completely.
I still do regular blood tests and physicals to make sure that my body is functioning properly. I continually monitor my thyroid because that seems to be the hardest aspect for me to regulate using plant foods exclusively.
I don’t like taking prescriptions or undergoing extreme medical procedures, but these treatments have their place. I tell my clients, as well as remind myself, that we should always do our best to give our body the right tools for it to repair itself. Which it is capable of doing in many instances, but other factors are in play, which means that calling in western medicine to help out is okay, and there is nothing to be ashamed of.
If you’d like to learn more about my story, what I went through, and how I overcame my medical hurdles, check out my ebook: “Plants, Pills, and Punchlines: Embracing Humor on the Road to Healing.” It includes some of the recipes that I used to transition to a whole-food plant-based diet in order to break free from chronic illness. I also have an ebook with delicious smoothie recipes. You can find both ebooks here: https://payhip.com/LaurieLandryWellness
I get asked about protein and iron the most since I’ve gone plant-based. My iron used to be low until I went plant-based. My protein levels have remained excellent and I get all that I need from plant foods. The animals that humans eat get their iron, protein, calcium, vitamins and minerals from plants. So we too can get ours right from the source itself—plants. In fact this is the best way, because we can bypass not only harming animals, but we don’t have to harm ourselves by taking in high amounts of saturated fats, salts and cholesterol.
I have a free guide: “5 Ways to Master Protein Needs on a Plant-Based Lifestyle” that walks you through exactly how much protein you need, what type of protein you need, and where to get it so you can reduce inflammation and start feeling your best. You can snag the free guide here: https://laurielandryhealth.com/free-guide
Since becoming vegan, my connection to animals feels stronger now more than ever. That’s surprising because I’ve always been a huge animal lover. I didn’t think it was possible to sympathize and empathize with animals more than I had before. It’s hard to explain but there’s an energy and a sense of respect and understanding that I’ve come to understand, and I can’t ever imagine intentionally harming an animal in any way. Especially for the sake of my taste buds.
I’m lucky to live in Los Angeles where there is a decent amount of plant-based and vegan food options. Unfortunately, many places serve impossible meat and beyond burgers which are terribly processed and won’t contribute to healing. Additionally, restaurant food usually contains inflammatory oils, high salt content, and processed sugar.
I try to make my own food as much as possible because I know that I am feeding my cells with nutrients which will help them repair and lower inflammation. This leads to disease reversal.
If you are looking to go vegan for the animals, the planet, and the people, I offer you high praise. That is such a wonderful and selfless act. Thank you. Don’t forget to advocate for cruelty free skin, hair, clothing, and cleaning products, as well as furniture and car interiors too.
If you are looking to go plant-based for your health, then avoid anything that is made of or comes from animals, and stick to whole foods that are unprocessed. Just because it’s labeled vegan doesn’t mean it’s good for you. It can be difficult to navigate the world of plant-based eating in order to heal. Especially if you don’t have anyone else you know going through what you are going through.
