Jessy is from Malaysia. She is currently working as a baker after completing her studies recently. Ever since turning meatless, she has been actively promoting a vegan lifestyle, low waste and sustainability lifestyle to more people.

Meatless Movement recently had a chance to chat with her. She told Meatless Movement that since switching to a meatless lifestyle, she has found her passion in cooking.

Please tell us more about yourself

My name is Jessy and I am a baker currently based in Malaysia. I am a foodie, and I enjoy learning how great dishes are made so that I could try them at home. It’s fun and fulfilling!

You can really save our planet by just making a simple switch – switching to a meatless diet

This is my third year practicing a meatless lifestyle. I decided to turn meatless within days after watching a documentary called “What The Health“. Other documentaries I have watched are Dominion, The Cove and Seaspiracy, etc. The primary reason I become vegetarian is because of environmental sustainability.

When I tried to make the switch, most of my family members aren’t supportive of me going meatless, thinking I will be missing a bunch of nutrients that need supplementing.

Even though my family members have not switched to full meatless diets yet, I am thankful that they are also reducing their meat intake each day. They must have been influenced by my move to meatless diets, we even had a vegetarian meal during the last Chinese New Year eve.

Being vegan in a non-vegan household, I always try out different kinds of delicious vegan dishes to impress my family members.

Interestingly, I finally found my passion in cooking and baking, and I have started to post short videos of recipes online.

I am currently a baker, and on my learning journey to explore more vegan baking and hopefully one day I can introduce more delectable pastries to the vegan community.

Handling social situations as a vegetarian

Eating out with friends can be tricky. I often feel bad when they are obligated to suggest veggie friendly places because of me. I am blessed that my friends are respectful of my life and choices, and would often involve me in the destination discussion. To be considerate, I just go where the group goes, and vote for places that have a menu with a few good options for me.

If and whenever possible, I would try to propose places that have options for everyone, such as restaurants which serve hotpots or poke bowls.

We can enjoy food without killing animals for our plates

I feel very happy of myself as I become more creative in creating new dishes for my friends and family to try, I am also more well aware of the food that I consume daily.

I always show my friend the posters / advertisements of plant based meat. I want them to know that food can be appetising, and we can enjoy food without killing animals for our plates.

If you are thinking of giving up meat, take it one step at a time and follow your own pace. You may start from small, such as drinking more soy milk instead of cow’s milk. If you unintentionally consume animal products, don’t get too down about it. Just be more aware and careful about what you eat the next time.
