Hi! I’m Elizabeth Jankovic (@elizabethisvegan on Instagram), I’m NYC based, and I’ve been vegan for over 7 and a half years.
I first discovered veganism back in high school when I was trying to eat healthier (after realizing that I ate quite unhealthy, and never paid attention to my diet). Lots of articles recommended reducing red meat and even dairy products to decrease saturated fat intake, so I started researching vegetarian meal ideas.
Through that research, I discovered veganism. I was confused what the word meant, but read more and learned that it meant consuming no animal products or byproducts. Soon after in my online research, I found out about the terrible animal cruelty — and that’s when I knew I needed to be vegan.
Over the span of a year and a half, I transitioned to a fully vegan diet — and I’m never going back. My skin is clearer, I no longer have high cholesterol, I have energy when I eat food (as opposed to slipping into a sleepy/tired “food coma” after meals), but most importantly — I’m doing something positive for both the animals AND the planet.
Here in NYC, there’s tons of vegan restaurants or even regular places with vegan options. You can check out my Instagram for hundreds of recommendations on where to go in NYC. I find it’s much easier in bigger cities, but even when in random towns you can find loads of vegan products in grocery stores.
If you’re nervous about giving up your favorite meals, look for restaurants or places that serve plant based versions of your classics.
Plantega (@eatplantega) is a plant based company that partners with local NYC delis to provide an additional vegan friendly menu in your local corner store. You can get a bacon egg and cheese or a fried chicken sandwich at your convenience, and all plant-based!
Taking baby steps and having the right reason(s) about why you want to go vegan or eat more plant-based foods is key. Check out my Instagram for periodic giveaways too, where you can win yummy vegan products or gift cards to restaurants!
