I make a choice every single day to reduce the harm I cause to the planet, animals and myself

-My name is Taryn! I am from Newport, Rhode Island but currently live in Los Angeles, California!

-i went vegetarian in 4th grade, I remember sitting at the lunch table with my friends with a plate of chicken tenders in front of me and making the connection. I chose to go veg in that moment because I loved animals and did not want to harm them. It’s was then my sophomore year of high school that I came across the documentary “earthlings” and learned the reality eggs/dairy and went full vegan overnight. I’m coming up on 10 years fully vegan!

-Honestly I never felt like being vegan was a challenge! Even though i went veg when it was wayyyyy less mainstream, if you are vegan for the right reasons it never feels like a challenge and just becomes 2nd nature. So many people will ask “how did you know what was vegan?!” And my response is always “google is your best friend” haha, if you have access to a search engine, you have the vegan world at your fingertips.

friends not food

-i LOVE being a vegan. I wish i was raised vegan from day 1 of life. It makes eating so exciting and i am proud to say i will never be the reason an animal is bred onto earth just to suffer. I try to promote vegan to everyone i love because I really think it is the best thing for everyone. For your health, for the animals and for the planet

MILvF (man, I love vegan food)

-i would tell someone who wants to try vegan food to eat it for what it is and not for what its not. So often people get caught up trying to compare foods and want vegan alternatives to taste identical to the non vegan version but if that’s your mindset you’ll just be constantly disappointed. If you go into trying it as if you are trying a whole new food, you just might like the alternative more than the original.

-if we’re talking Rhode Island, defiantly hit up wildflour bakery, apothica cafe or plant city providence. I love apothica in particular because it is a small queer/Latino owned business that has one of the most creative drink menus I’ve ever seen. If were talking California (LA) pura vita, montys and gracias madre have quickly become my favorites. I love pura vita in particular because never in my 10 years of veganism have i found good vegan mozzarella sticks, but they have them nailed!

-some misconceptions about being vegan is that it is expensive/hard. You always hear this coming from people who have never tried it. But the people who have actually lived it, will tell you the opposite. I have been vegan at points in my life where i was so broke the only food i had access too was from the dollar tree and i was still able to find options and make it work.

-to someone who is just starting, take it day by day, meal by meal. It is easy to feel intimidated by what most people consider a “big life change” but if you just take it meal by meal, you will learn it is so much easier than you could have even thought.

Promoting veganism has always been my passion,
if you’re ever thinking about taking a leap of faith, do it

-my closing remark would be that in any social justice issue, those who are on the right side of history always begin as the minority. That is where veganism is currently, we are the minority who has the audacity to question the status quo. However the more people we can inspire to take their blinders off and know the truth about the cruel industry behind meat/dairy/egg production, the more people we can inspire to be a part of the change. It may be easy to feel like you are “just one person” but you are one person who spends a lot of money and eats a lot of food. You are one person who can influence and inspire countless others with your actions. You are one person that can make a change.
