From her early years, Leanne had harbored a unique relationship with meat – a distaste for its taste, how it felt within her, and an innate aversion to both its preparation and consumption. This instinctive connection to a vegetarian inclination was something she had embraced intermittently since leaving home.
However, it wasn’t until the documentary “What the Health” on Netflix that Leanne’s perspective evolved. Beyond her personal preferences, she started to uncover the profound impact of dietary choices on her health and the world around her. With newfound insight, she embarked on a vegan journey, marking the transition towards a lifestyle aligned with her intrinsic values.
Leanne’s journey reflects a growth from ignorance to awareness, from uninformed choices to a profound understanding of the ethical and environmental repercussions of the industries that produce meat, fish, and dairy. What once existed as a lack of education around the suffering animals endure has transformed into a passionate drive to advocate for change.
In sharing her story, Leanne invites us to reflect on the power of knowledge, personal convictions, and the importance of aligning our actions with our beliefs. Her evolution from instinctive vegetarianism to a conscious vegan lifestyle underscores the transformative potential that lies within each of us when we embrace the journey of learning, growth, and positive change.
Tell us more about yourself
Hi, My name is Leanne. I am a raw vegan.
I originally went vegan about 7 years ago after my husband and I watched the documentary “What the health” on Netflix I have always disliked the taste of meat, and how it felt inside me, I have also always had a strong natural aversion to it, and to preparing it or eating it. So I avoided it where possible being instinctively vegetarian on and off from the time I left home.
I was very ignorant about health though and was 100% ignorant about the horrific suffering that the meat, fish and dairy industries cause to animals. I had no education about those things at all.
Watching “what the health” was the turning point for us as a family. At that point becoming vegan was a decision we made for health as both my daughter and myself had a number of life long health issues. After becoming vegan though, l quite quickly became aware of the ethical reasons for veganism, and from that point being vegan became a very ethical decision for me. In the 3 years following we were strictly vegan, and did not deviate from it.
As I mentioned, I was sick for most of my life and our daughter was displaying many of the symptoms I suffered. She showed them much earlier than I had thought and they were also more severe than they had been for me as a child. We were very afraid by this.

Though we did notice some very minimal improvements in some of the life long digestive issues both my daughter and I had after becoming vegan, unfortunately the improvements were so small they were almost un notable and the health issues only continued to worsen.
We remained quite ignorant when it came to health and about 3 years after becoming vegan we gave in to fear, advise from well meaning loved ones, and traditional miss information, that says “you need animal products to be healthy” For a year or so after that we ate some animal products again… Unsurprisingly this did not help our health at all and both my daughter and I continued to deteriorate badly.
Very long story short both my daughter and I were diagnosed with a genetic conective tissue disorder called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and we both had to undergo life saving spine and brain surgery’s. (To protect my daughters privacy I do not talk in any detail about her health story, so I will stick to my own.)
Following the surgery’s my life was saved and I was able to stay conscious, keep down solid food, sit up, weight bare, and walk sort distances. I was still very sick though, and most of my days were spent resting watching life happen around me but being largely unable to participate in it.
I was and will always be grateful beyond words for the gift of life the surgery’s gave me, I was struggling to accept how little I could do though, especially when it came to being a mummy and wife though. I wanted to be able to “live” the second chance at life I was given.
I am a Christian so I did what comes naturally to me, I prayed for help and trusted God to provide, as He always has done. Only days after, I came across a YouTube video and I knew I had to watch it. It was the raw healing story of a lady who became my mentor, and now good friend, Skye Conway. @roar.skye As I watched Skye’s incredible raw healing story, I decided on the spot to go raw.
Long story short.. Feeling Doubtful that she would even see my message, I decided to reach out to Skye if only to thank her for her story and tell her of the decision I had made because of her story. To my surprise and delight she replied within minutes!! Skye called me the very next day, I went raw that day and I have never looked back! I had the massive blessing of being coached by skye for the first 12 weeks of my raw vegan journey and I believe that her coaching has been very key to my successes!!
Before I went raw I could not so much as chop a cucumber, yet within days of doing so, I began to see the first improvements in my health!
Within 6 weeks there were some very large improvements and within 3 months I was symptom free of some of the chronic illnesses I had, including Gastropresis, ulcerative colitis, and POTS. I was also able to come off all medications for those conditions!
I also began to be able to help my husband prepare my food and by the 3 month mark I was preparing the food for my family daily!! My long lost creativity returned to me also and I began creating my own raw vegan recipes, spending hours a day in the kitchen creating!
I also began sharing my raw vegan journey on my social media in the hope that I might inspire and help others to gain their health through raw foods!! I have recently celebrated my first year as a raw vegan and I can not wait for all the years to come!! I am now completely medication free, I remain symptom free of the above conditions and though I am not completely symptom free of EDS, many of the symptoms have disappeared and any remaining are so much improved. The life I live now was impossible for me before raw foods!
A little while after I began sharing my raw vegan health journey, and my raw food creations, Skye invited me to share my recipes on her ROAR website https://www.roarskye.com/leannes-roar-recipes We also work together on a weekly IG live called Dinner Club. https://www.instagram.com/tv/Cvt9QsDJIrQ/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
We will soon be opening a special Dinner club membership area where will be sharing all our delicious raw Dinner Club recipes and also other raw vegan tips! I love my life and I love sharing what raw foods have done for me!
My raw pizza, sweet potato chips, chilli, “cream cheese” sauce, pesto wrap, durian sweet cannoli, are all “Dinner Club” recipes. Those recipes and all other Dinner Club recipes from @roar.skye and me, will soon be up on a special Dinner Club membership sight. I do eat out as a raw vegan. We are a British family living in the Philippines, there is some language barrier so at first it was a little nerve racking. The first place we ate out as raw vegans is a vegan cafe called “Clean cafe” We enjoy going there often.
There are two meals on their menu that they adjust for me to make them totally raw, this works well and the two raw dishes I always eat there taste great! Our favorite place to eat out is actually a French restaurant called “cerise tomate” Cerise tomato is not a vegan or even vegetarian restaurant, but they make us the very best raw vegan food that we have found here in any restaurant!! We first went there to celebrate my first birthday as a raw vegan. My husband called ahead, explained what a raw vegan is and they provided us with beautiful, delicious, and very satisfying Raw vegan dishes! We now eat there regularly, and they always serve us the same wonderful raw dishes, we are never disappointed!!
There is another vegan cafe we go to some times called “The vegan dinosaur” They do not serve any fully raw dishes so I do not eat there, but they have a smoothie on their menu that they adjust for me so that it is raw, which I enjoy. I now feel confident eating out as a raw vegan, and if I am some where it is impossible to get any raw fruits or vegetables, I either take some raw food with me or just drink water and eat before and after. Another “trick” I have used is to order what ever raw salad is available and take one of my raw vegan home dressings, some fresh red chillis and an avocado with me. This works well too.
I love being raw vegan, being raw is one of the very best decisions I have ever made in my life. I am still an ethical vegan, I am vegan for the animals and I feel very passionate about my choice to have nothing to do with animal suffering. I am raw vegan for my health and I feel very passionate about sharing what raw foods have done for me, and about sharing my raw food creations and recipes also I hope to inspire others to heal their body’s and their minds through raw foods.
If anyone is seeking to become vegan or raw vegan.. Do it! It will be one of the best decisions you ever make! If you want to continue eating cooked foods my advice is to stick to whole foods and incorporate as many raw fruits a veggies as possible. If you would like to become raw vegan, my advice is to make the switch a meal at a time. I went raw “over night”, it worked for me, and if you are sick I recommend that. If you are not sick though and just wanting to improve your diet, I suggest you switch your meals to raw gradually until you feel confident in your raw diet.
First switch your typical breakfast for whole raw fruits or a big smoothie. Next switch your snacks to raw fruits or veggies, then as you feel ready switch your other to meals to raw also. In my raw vegan diet, I like to get the majority of my calories from fruits, but I also include some greens throughout and in the evening I enjoy a lovely big salad. I include fats like avocado and some type of raw dressing containing raw seeds in my salad also, as though I like to include some fats in my raw diet I feel best when I keep fats for the evening in general. I also enjoy some raw nuts.
As I mentioned I love creating fun satisfying raw vegan meals! So I also create raw meals which include raw meals such as curries, pies, sushi, wraps, pizzas, tacos, raw deserts.. Raw food is so much fun!! I have recently begun raw vegan coaching too, so if you would be interested in receiving coaching reach out!! My IG is @raw_lea_marie
