Nami, the founder of Vegan Babe, recently had a conversation with the Meatless Movement.

Vegan Babe, which originated from a batch of 20 “Vegan Babe” T-shirts sold at a vegan restaurant in South Beach, Miami, has now transformed into a globally recognized lifestyle brand. By wearing Vegan Babe apparel, individuals not only express their values but also raise awareness and initiate discussions about veganism.

Vegan Babe prioritizes its mission and impact rather than focusing solely on financial gain.

My name is Nami; I was born and raised in a small town in Nebraska. I went vegetarian eight years ago and went vegan shortly after. Ironically, I grew up on a farm where I was helping my dad feed cattle and load them into the semi to send to the slaughterhouses. After graduating from College, I moved to Miami, where “Vegan Babe” came to life. I moved out to Los Angeles in 2020 and currently reside here.

Vegan Babe is a high-quality, ethical streetwear/loungewear brand with cute and witty designs. Our goal is to spark conversation around being vegan and empower women to feel their best. We believe in impact over profit. We aim to spread awareness about being vegan and build a community for vegans and non-vegans to come together, learn, connect, and grow.

What are common misunderstandings surrounding vegetarianism or veganism? How do you go about educating and clarifying these misconceptions?

The only difference is no animal was harmed in the making of our food

People are picking up on plant-based diets because of the science, data, and new studies on the benefits of a plant-based diet. People are becoming more aware of the role their diet contributes to their health (physically, mentally, and spiritually.) Most people don’t want to hurt animals and I believe people are starting to stand up against animal abuse once they see how their food was really made. And in 2023, more than ever, we have endless vegan options, making transitioning to a vegan diet more accessible than ever.

Besides the basic “But where do you get your protein” or “Can you still eat fish” I think the biggest misconception is that being vegan means you’re on a strict diet. Being vegan is a moral belief system in opposition to the exploitation and oppression of animals. At times it is out of our control to avoid animal exploitation, but the goal is to avoid it and choose the kinder option as much as possible.
