Tell us more about yourself, please
I’m Alex Felipelli, founder and CEO of Veggly.
I have a background in computer engineering and a career working in different high-tech positions from software development and project management to marketing and sales. Vegan for 8 years, I have created and launched Veggly in mid 2019.
In two and a half years, Veggly has grown to become the world’s leading app in Vegan and Vegetarian Dating, with 1,000,000 users and more than 3,000,000 VegMatches to date and a lot of happy users who found their soulmates: https://www.veggly.net/testimonials/
Our mission is to bring vegans and vegetarians together and help people make the transition easier be it via finding a partner or making new friends.
When I decided to create the app, I was single and using other dating apps and felt how bad the experience can be for a vegan in those apps. I felt a dating app for vegans would be a great way to meet like-minded people, so I did some research and decided to create it. Quit my job and started to dedicate myself to it full time.
It can be seen as similar to other dating apps, such as Tinder but the main difference is the audience one can expect to find, with 60% of users being vegan, 30% vegetarian and 10% in transition.
Having said that, we also have features specifically for our audience, such as information about activism, how long a user has been vegan or vegetarian etc. Not to mention, all of the communication is from an app created by vegans for vegans.
Funny story: I created the app from a personal need but I never got to use it! I started dating my now wife before I was ready to launch. I met her at a vegan fair in São Paulo, Brazil, where we are from.
Can you share any compelling user success stories from your vegan dating app?
There are so many heartwarming stories that it’s really hard to pick one. People who found boyfriends and girlfriends, people who met many best friends, people who got married and even several kids born from a couple who met on Veggly. All of these stories are the best part of our job and make us so happy to get to work every day.
Why do you think there is a growing trend towards meatless diets?
I believe it’s a conjunction of factors. As people realize they don’t need meat to eat well and as they become more compassionate about animals (usually starting from pets), they realize it makes no sense to continue eating meat.
I also give a lot of credit to the documentaries that showed people the truth, not to mention the environmental impact that people are starting to make the connection to animal farming.
What are some common misconceptions surrounding vegetarian or vegan lifestyles?
One common misconception surrounding vegetarian or vegan lifestyles is the belief that protein needs to be obtained from animal products. I try to educate by living as an example as well as sharing information on how to learn more
