I’ve had an aversion to meat since birth and grew up vegetarian, so the foundation for a vegetarian lifestyle has always been a part of who I am. About 20 years ago, my journey deepened when my aunt was diagnosed with cancer. That experience led me to embrace a plant-based diet for health reasons. Over time, I discovered the raw vegan diet and had a profound transformation. However, it wasn’t an easy transition—I struggled with it for a while, going back and forth until I fully committed to a vegan lifestyle a few years ago, motivated not only by health but also by ethical reasons.

What are some challenges faced in finding vegan/vegetarian food? or eating out with friends, etc. How do you overcome these?

Finding vegan or vegetarian food and navigating social situations like eating out with friends or attending holidays and events posed some real challenges, especially early on. I faced a lot of criticism from family and friends and didn’t have much support at the time. Holidays and certain events were particularly tempting, as were dining at restaurants that didn’t cater to plant-based lifestyles. It required a complete shift in my mindset and lifestyle to stay committed.

To overcome these challenges, I sought out a supportive community and even started a raw vegan meetup in Los Angeles to connect with like-minded individuals. I watched documentaries to stay inspired, followed influencers for motivation, and created new traditions that aligned with my values—rethinking how I celebrated holidays and what I did for fun. Over time, I discovered vegan restaurants that I love, which made dining out much more enjoyable.

Having a supportive partner has also been a game-changer. My vegan partner makes it easier to maintain a fully vegan household without non-vegan items. This journey has taught me that building a supportive environment, both socially and at home, is essential for staying committed and thriving in a plant-based lifestyle.

I’d encourage them to start by exploring vegan restaurants and trying plant-based versions of their favorite dishes—it’s a fun and delicious way to see how satisfying meatless options can be. I’d also suggest experimenting with making vegan meals at home and gradually incorporating them into their diet, like starting with one vegan meal a day or a few plant-based meals each week.

For those open to it, I’d recommend trying a raw food cleanse for a few days to experience how light and energized it can make you feel. The key is to approach it with curiosity and an open mind—treat it as an opportunity to discover new flavors, foods, and ways of nourishing your body. Gradual changes can lead to a smoother, more enjoyable transition.

In Los Angeles, we’re fortunate to have an amazing variety of vegan and raw food options, and I have a few favorites that I’d highly recommend.

Au Lac is a standout for my favorite cheezy kelp noodle pasta, which is indulgent yet light—a true comfort food.

Wild Living Foods offers a raw rainbow wrap that’s bursting with fresh, vibrant flavors, and their raw crepes are a guilt-free dessert that feels like a real treat.

Raw Cane Super Juice is another gem, with raw jicama tacos that are refreshing and flavorful, along with their raw cane juice that make for the perfect healthy indulgence.

Cafe Gratitude is one of my go-to spots as well; their coconut calamari and oyster mushroom ‘chicken’ are so creative and satisfying, it’s hard to believe they’re vegan!

And you can’t go wrong with Pura Vida for their vegan Italian cuisine.

At home, I love making zucchini or kelp noodle pasta, raw wraps, and dishes with cauliflower or mushrooms, which are versatile and filling. I try to avoid bread and overly nut-heavy dishes, focusing instead on foods that are light, energizing, and packed with flavor.

People assume vegans only eat salads or bland food, but in reality, plant-based cuisine is incredibly diverse, flavorful, and nourishing. Another misconception is that it’s difficult to get enough protein or essential nutrients on a vegan diet. However, with proper education and planning, a well-rounded plant-based diet can be both nutritionally complete and deeply satisfying.

I also hear concerns that going vegan means giving up social connections or missing out on celebrations, but I’ve found that creating new traditions and sharing plant-based meals with loved ones can be a beautiful way to bond and inspire others.

I educate others by sharing my personal journey, including the challenges I’ve overcome and the immense benefits I’ve experienced, from improved health to greater alignment with my values. Through my online membership community for women, the Ageless Beauty Collective, I provide resources, guidance, and support to help others explore this lifestyle in a way that works for them. Education, inspiration, and building a supportive community are key to shifting perspectives and showing how accessible, enjoyable, and rewarding a plant-based lifestyle can truly be.

Finding a supportive community can make a huge difference. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals, whether it’s friends, family, or online groups, to share tips and encouragement. I also recommend exploring documentaries, cookbooks, and social media influencers for inspiration and ideas.

Remember, this is a journey, not a race. Be kind to yourself, and don’t worry about being perfect. Focus on progress rather than perfection, and celebrate every step you take toward a more plant-based lifestyle.
