Meatless Movement recently spoke with the team behind Veganxoxo, a food manufacturer in Hong Kong, which produces the vegan version of the XO sauce. Most XO sauces in the market are made from ingredients of seafood sources. This guilt-free version features the same cast of spices and mushrooms to create the pleasant savory taste that traditional XO sauce is known for.

Veganxoxo told Meatless Movement that their most encouraging episode is a sharing from a returning customer that she was amazed how good plant based XO sauce could be, and has since been willing to explore goodness of vegetables and reduce consumption of meat!

Plant-based diet has been adopted by more and more individuals with concern about animal rights. Although our xo sauce was originally created for fellow vegans, much to our surprise over 80% of our customers are not vegetarian or vegan at all! This not only surprised us but also empowered us to spread the idea of veganism!

XO sauce has been playing an important role in our local cuisine: the Chinese New Year turnip cake, the stir fried rice roll when you go Yum Cha (飲茶) with parents, the Hong Kong style instant noodle stir fry (公仔麵) from Cha Chaan Teng (茶餐廳), you name it! It means something to us to veganise this taste of home.

Somen noodles, generous spoon of vegan xo sauce, splash of soy sauce, and you’re all set. It’s just so versatile! Basic ways are to enjoy it with noodles, turnip cake, fried rice or dumplings. But don’t limit yourself with that! Cook it with pasta, serve it on a toast, or enjoy it on its own with your favourite sake or wine.
